Caring for your carpet:

The carpet and rug institute suggests that you get your carpet professionally cleaned and re-protected every 12 to 18 months.  Clean regularly, and you can double the life of your carpet.  Commonwealth Carpet cleaning is happy to offer you the following additional suggestions that will allow your carpet to look its best between cleanings:

Vacuum once per week for inhabitant of household (example: 3 people and I dog = 4 times per week).  While this may seem excessive, 70-90% of carpet dirt is dry soil.  If dry soil is left too long, it absorbs cooking oils or body oils, and then can not be vacuumed out.  Leave street shoes at the door.  Have house shoes, slippers or socks available to change into.  Don’t be tempted to just run out of the house quickly with your house only footwear (say to get the mail) as you will pick up oil, tar and grease, which are very hard on your carpet.  It takes 60 feet or more of walking on carpet to clean off the bottoms of street shoes.

Stains:

Don’t purchase or use spotting or cleaning products from a store.  They can actually do more harm than good by setting stains, removing color or making your carpet vulnerable to getting dirty faster!  If you don’t have access or time at the moment to get a professional out, mix a solution of 10-33% white vinegar, the rest clear clean water.  Apply a small amount, blot repeatedly with a dry “white” cotton cloth.  After spotting, place a box fan or a small oscillating fan on the spot to dry.  This mix will get out many, but not all, spots and stains.  However, it will not damage the carpet or make it so that a professional cleaner can’t get it out either.

Urine Stains:

When urine first contacts the carpet, it is actually sterile! Urine contains largely salts, minerals and water. Then as the spot dries, the odor tends to go away (without excess moisture and humidity you may not smell anything). Where things get a little more complex is that the urine also contains salt, and salt attracts moisture. When humidity rises, the salts attract moisture, and the bacteria becomes active again and starts to create more stinky odors.  Our IICRC-Certified trained professionals will assess the level of contamination and recommend the cleaning procedure best suited for your situation.

Carpet Cleaning:

Leftover carpet cleaning solutions can act as a magnet for dirt. That’s why we use our exclusive two-step carpet cleaning system that includes an essential extra step – a specially formulated pH-balancing fiber rinse that removes carpet cleaning solution residue right along with deep-down dirt. All that is left behind is a cleaner, softer, more beautiful carpet.

When our professionally trained IICRC-Certified professional, insured carpet cleaning technicians arrive at your home, they start with a pre-inspection to identify problem areas. A special heated carpet cleaning solution is sprayed deep into the carpet fibers to loosen deep down dirt. It is followed by a high-powered extraction and pH-balancing fiber rinse reaching temperatures up to 220 degrees to remove the dirt and cleaning solution, leaving your carpet as clean as it can be.

Carpet Protectors:

We then recommend an application of Carpet and Upholstery Protector (optional) and/or Carpet Deodorizer (optional). Reapplying the carpet protector helps restore protective properties to your carpet, making it easier to care for.  It will protect against oil and water based stains in several kinds of carpets.  This will make cleaning your carpet and upholster easier and quicker in the future, allowing stains to come out more quickly.  It repels dirt, water and oil, and extends the life of your carpet and upholstery.
